WHO
AM
I ?

Deo Kato

I am an ultra-endurance runner, a human rights activist, and a global speaker. I use endurance sport as a platform for social change and human connection.

I was born in Uganda and moved to the UK at ten, where I’ve lived ever since. I started running in my early twenties—inside my house. After years of medical appointments, I had an undiagnosed condition that makes it difficult for my body to regulate temperature, causing it to overheat. I started running out of necessity, to heal my body. It worked. Though I still live with the condition, my body now regulates temperature much better, and I can be in hot environments. I discovered trail running while backpacking in Australia and New Zealand, and it brought back all the memories of my life in Uganda.

When I returned to the UK, I signed up for a 100km ultramarathon—and that’s where my ultrarunning adventures began. In 2020, my activism journey began with the 381 Days: Running For Justice movement, in which I ran 10km every day for 381 consecutive days. Inspired by the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted 381 days, the movement marked my commitment to ending racism. This led to my storytelling journey, in which I ran from Cape Town to London to tell the history of human migration.

381 Days: Running For Justice Campaign

Campaign Period: June 6th, 2020 – June 21st, 2021 (381 consecutive days)

Mission & Inspiration

I launched the Running For Justice campaign in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd. It was my commitment to “active activism” in response to racial injustice and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The 381-day duration was inspired by the historic 1955–56 Montgomery Bus Boycott, when African Americans in Alabama protested segregation on public buses for 381 days. That story shaped the structure of this run and the message behind it.

The Challenge

Commitment

  • I ran a minimum of 10km (6.2 miles) every single day for 381 consecutive days

Purpose

  • I raised awareness and campaigned against racism

Message

  • I used endurance and visibility as a form of sustained protest.

Campaign Completion

I completed the 381-day run streak and celebrated the milestone by taking a knee at Downing Street in London, as a symbolic gesture calling for justice and equality.

The campaign continued beyond 381 days. I kept running for justice, peace, and equality.

Legacy & Impact

  • Established Deo as a leading voice in sports activism
  • Demonstrated the power of sustained, visible protest
  • Inspired the hashtag #RunningForJustice movement
  • Set the foundation for future campaigns, including the Cape Town to London expedition.
  • Featured in numerous media outlets and podcasts, amplifying the message of racial justice

5th Anniversary (2025): The campaign’s impact continues to be celebrated, and I have reflected on how the Running For Justice movement has developed since that solitary moment at Downing Street.
